Israeli President Isaac Herzog has informed Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar Party, that he will task him with forming a new government.
Eisenkot has been summoned to the presidential residence to formally receive the mandate on Sunday, November 8, at 5:00 p.m.

The decision follows Herzog’s consultations with political parties in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. Parties representing 67 lawmakers recommended Eisenkot to form the government, while those representing 46 lawmakers backed outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A seven-member parliamentary group recommended neither candidate.
Once he receives the mandate, Eisenkot will have the first opportunity to negotiate a new governing majority. The development could bring Netanyahu’s time at the head of the Israeli government to an end.
The Yashar leader will have 28 days from formally receiving the mandate to form a cabinet and secure the necessary parliamentary support. If talks take longer, President Herzog can grant him an additional 14 days.
However, the recommendations do not guarantee Eisenkot a working majority in the 120-seat parliament. Support expressed during the consultations does not necessarily mean an agreement on a governing coalition.
