Seeks to have sentence time-barred: GJKKO postpones hearing for former prosecutor Adriatik Llalla; reason revealed

The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) has postponed the hearing on a request by former Prosecutor General Adriatik Llalla, who is seeking to have his two-year prison sentence for concealing assets declared time-barred. The next hearing will be held on November 16.

The hearing was postponed after a prosecutor from the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) requested more time to review the submissions filed by the former chief prosecutor’s defense.

Llalla is asking for the sentence handed down to him in 2021 to be declared time-barred. His argument is that five years have passed since the ruling without him serving the two-year prison sentence.

Llalla was found guilty of failing to declare and concealing assets in three instances: he had not declared around $7,000 spent on the birth of his son, the costs of building the third floor of his home, and his daughter’s education in Germany.

The court also ordered the confiscation of an apartment in Durrës and around 22,000 square meters of land on the outskirts of Tirana, and barred him from holding public office for five years.

After leaving Albania, Llalla sought political asylum in Italy, where he was arrested in December 2021. He was later released due to his health condition, on the condition that he remain under surveillance by the Italian authorities.
